BRIAN

BRIAN

Brian is a 27 yr old man who has a brain injury which occured at birth.

Brian has reduced peripheral vision due to the brain injury which compromised the function of his Occipital Lobe.  Brian also has issues with impulse control, and some issues with information processing. Brian attended a special needs school, but did well there and has been a shelf stacker in a local supermarket since leaving school. Legally Brian has full decision-making capacity.

Brian wants to attend a stag party he has been invited to,  where all of his friends are going paintballing . Brian has worked hard to build a good social life and now considers himself to have a handful of friends whom he trusts and who have supported him in accepting  his disabilities.  However,  Brian wants to feel that he can be involved in all activities which his friends enjoy.  They frequently attend paintballing sessions, and Brian feels left out and frustrated that others feel this activity may be dangerous for him.

You are an Independant Occupational Therapist with experience in risk management.  There is no doubt that this is a higher risk for Brian than his friends. You have been supporting both Brian and his mother (who Brian lives with)  in your role. Brian's mother is very concerned about Brian's safety and welfare and is strongly encouraging you to persuade Brian to not go paintballing, in his best interests.

What do you do?

It is proposed that you strongly advise Brian not to go paintballing with his friends
